Side-effects of tramadol use in children

Tramadol, available for sale under the trade names of ConZip and ultram must not be administered to children below the age of twelve years. It has been reported that ingestion of this medication in children resulted in fatal respiratory depression – slow, shallow breathing and even death. Accidental intake of this medication can have life-threatening effects in children. It is mandated that tramadol use should be prohibited in children who have not yet attained the age of eighteen years and also in cases where tonsils and adenoids have been removed through surgical procedures.


The usage of this medication in adolescents falling in the age bracket of twelve to eighteen years who are prone to risk factors than can heighten their sensitivity to its respiratory depressant effects. The potential risk factors include: obstructive sleep apnea, serious lung disease, post surgery respiratory depression, obesity, neuromuscular disease and using other medications simultaneously with tramadol that may lead to respiratory depression (shallow or stopped breathing).



Side-effects of tramadol use in the elderly population

The elderly people are, in particular, prone to the side effects associated with the tramadol pills. This is because of the decreased kidney or liver function and lowered metabolism or excretion in them.

Gastrointestinal side effects such as constipation are more common in patients who are above the age of 75 years as compared to patients below the age of 65 years.


Tramadol may be habit-forming

This medication is structurally linked to the opioids such as morphine and codeine and can cause physical and psychological dependence, withdrawal as well as addiction. Individuals who have a history of exhibiting drug-seeking behavior are at an increased risk of addiction. However, illegitimate actions can happen with individuals with no past history of addiction. You must ensure to keep this medication in a place that is beyond the reach of anyone else for the prevention of accidental overdose.


You should not discontinue the treatment with tramadol pain pills suddenly or make changes in the dosage schedule as it may cause the occurrence of withdrawal reactions. The withdrawal symptoms include diarrhea, sweating, anxiety, having problem in falling sleep, nausea, tremors, shivering, hallucinations and pain.


You should take the advice of the medical practitioner prior to discontinuing the treatment with tramadol. Do not take this decision on your own accord. Withdrawal reactions can be alleviated by re-initiation of the opioid treatment followed by a gradual reduction in tramadol dose, as per the doctor’s recommendation.
